Prominent streamer

DrLupo has become one of the most prominent streamers on Twitch, partly due to his ability on the renowned title Fortnite. The 32 year-old is also known for holding joint-streams with other personalities on the platform, such as Timothy ‘TimTheTatman’ Betar and Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins.

While this was a particularly successful stream for DrLupo, the Twitch personality has become known for his charity work over the years, and has contributed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital previously. This pediatric hospital and research facility is particularly focused on treating cancer in children, and does not charge any of its patients, despite annual running costs which exceed $1 billion.

Several well-known Twitch creators donated generously to the cause. The largest donation from a big name came from the aforementioned Ninja, who provided $30,000 of his own money. But many small donations ensured that the 24-hour stream was a massive success.

Fellow streamer ‘Wildcat’ donated $16,420.69 to ensure that the total reached $1 million with approximately 18 minutes left on the live stream. And the $1 million donated by Twitch itself meant that the hospital ultimately benefits from a superb $2 million donation.

Previous feat

This feat had previously been achieved by DrLupo in 2018, when both the streamer and his wife became visibly emotional after reaching the $1 million target. The second successful charity stream is a testament to the highly united and generous gaming community, who contribute a vast amount of money to a wide variety of causes over platforms such as Twitch.

Other notable donators included RektGlobal, the organization behind CoD’s London Royal Ravens, LazarBeam, an Australian YouTuber, and Logitech, the well-known computer software manufacturers. Interestingly, the largest donation of all emanated from CCKun91, who is merely a small Twitch streamer. CCKun91 pledged the small matter of $37,777.77.

What is particularly interesting, and a testament to the increasing popularity of Twitch, is that DrLupo was able to raise the $1 million in 2018 over the entirety of the calendar year. On this occasion, the streamer exceeded this figure in just 24 hours.

Mixer challenge

Twitch has recently been challenged by other gaming platforms, with YouTube running its own service, and Mixer also attempting to compete with the market-leader. Indeed, Mixer has been successful in signing up several of the biggest names from Twitch, including Ninja, who is widely regarded to be the most popular and successful Twitch streamer of all time.

With eSports also becoming a part of the mainstream culture, and appearing on television on a regular basis, it seems that the gaming niche will only go from strength to strength in the future.
