Nintendo has just announced it will be selling a special edition Switch to go alongside Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The special edition Nintendo Switch will be available on 13 March, a week before Animal Crossing: New Horizons goes on sale on 20 March.

If you’re big Animal Crossing fan, the special edition switch will be an eye catching addition to your collection.

Back in November we reported on Nintendo’s decision to add paid subscriptions to Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. The move was controversial because Nintendo, until recently, has stayed away from in-game paid subscriptions.

But Animal Crossing: New Horizons will actually be the first animal crossing game released on the Switch, hence the special edition console.

What’s special about the new Animal Crossing Switch?

While the new special edition Animal Crossing Switch won’t actually come with any hardware upgrades, it will certainly look very different to the standard Switch.

As reported by IGN, the new Switch will be a lot greener than current Switch owners are used to.

Instead of the red and blue Joy-Cons we’re used to, the upcoming special edition Switch will feature one sky blue Joy-Con and one mint green Joy-Con. Instead of the standard black/grey accent on the connection piece, the special edition Switch will get a cream accent.

Meanwhile, there is an Animal Crossing-themed design on the back of the console, although it is black like the standard version.

The dock is probably the nicest upgrade of the entire console, coloured in same cream as the Joy-Con accents, with three Nook Clan characters on the back.

The game itself will include a number of new features to set it apart from previous releases. The most notable feature is the vacation island, where players will be able to travel and set up their own home.

As you can see from the photos of the special edition switch, the handset follows the vacation theme found in the game.

Update: 31/01/2020: It looks as though the new green and blue Joy-Cons will be sold separately as spotting on Japan’s Nintendo website. Spotted via Nintendo Reddit.

Other special edition Switches

This isn’t the first special edition Switch Nintendo has released. There have been a number of other special editions, each released to coincide with the launch of a new game.

In total, Nintendo has released seven special edition Switches in the past. These have commemorated the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, Pokémon Let’s Go (Pikachu and Eevee), Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Diablo 3, Dragon Quest XI, Splatoon 2 and Pokémon Sword & Shield.

If you’re a big fan of Animal Crossing, the special edition Animal Crossing: New Horizons console should be a great way to commemorate the release of the first ever Animal Crossing game to be released on the Switch.

As with most special edition Nintendo Switches, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons version should come bundled with the game, although Nintendo hasn’t confirmed this yet. Pre-orders for the console are currently available for $299.
