After 13 years, Valve is finally releasing another Half-Life game. Half-Life 2 was released in 2004 but the second episode of this installment was released in 2007. Since then, fans have been calling for another sequel. Next March, gamers will finally be able to engage with the series again with the release of Half-Life: Alyx.
A new perspective
This game doesn’t focus on the franchise’s main protagonist Gordon Freeman. Instead, it is played from the point of view of Alyx Vance, a previously non-playable character within the Half-Life 2 generation of games.
Alyx is the daughter of Dr. Eli Vance who was an important character in the story as he was the first human being to make peaceful contact with the Vortigaunt species. Therefore, he was able to persuade the alien race to ally with humanity against the Combine invasion of Earth. Unfortunately, he was killed by a Combine Advisor at the end of Episode 2, with the game ending with Alyx mourning over her father.
The upcoming release will be a prequel to the last game as it will be set between the era of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. The father and daughter combination will team up to fight against the Combine’s occupation. Fans will finally be able to engage with the Half-Life universe through a new generation of technology as it is a VR exclusive.
According to its official website, the game will be compatible with Valve Index, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, Oculus Rift, and Oculus Quest. Furthermore, if players ready own or purchase Valve Index before the end of 2019, they will get access to special bonus content.
Gamespot reports that this will include environments from the game in users’ SteamVR Home space. Along with alternate gun skins for Half-Life: Alyx. There will also be Alyx-themed content for Valve’s other key product, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Alyx will retail at $59.99, however, there will be a 10 percent discount if pre-ordered by March 2020. However, there is a way to have the game for free. Those who have or will purchase a Valve Index will already obtain the game at no extra cost. Alternatively, even if someone just purchases the Valve Index Controllers, they will also get the game for free. Upon release, the game will appear in gamers’ Steam library.
Return to action
Gamers have had mixed responses to the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx. With it being the first Half-Life game over a decade, many are just happy to experience another outing in a new era. However, there are others that are disappointed that this isn’t an official Half-Life 3.
In an interview with The Game Awards, Game designer Robin Walker previously stated that even as late as 2016 Valve had been working on concepts for a Half-Life 3. However, they knew that it would be a frightful and daunting prospect.
They also feared that the expectations would be too high for this title. Therefore, Alyx is a great way to break back into the fold. Perhaps, with the confidence built on the back of the game, they will be inspired to release the official third edition of the franchise later on in the decade.
